Why Roadie asks for information and permissions

Account · 5 min read ·

New improvements sometimes need a little more information or permission. Here is why we ask, who needs to respond, and how we keep the request to the bare minimum.

We keep improving Roadie so it can do more for you and your team. Sometimes an improvement needs information or permission that your account has not provided yet. When that happens, Roadie explains what is needed, what it makes possible, and where to provide it.

Only the bare minimum

We only want the minimum account information needed to make Roadie work for you. A request should tell you what we need and why we need it. The permissions page also explains where Twitch bundles broader access. Roadie does not ask for a permission until a feature that uses it exists. You should not have to fill out extra account details just because Roadie has a new feature.

Information and permissions are different: an email address is information; allowing Roadie to read something from Twitch is permission. Twitch describes each permission on its approval screen. Roadie's notice explains the features it enables in everyday language.

What permissions do we ask for, and why?

There are three ways to sign in with Twitch, and none of them asks for anything about a channel. The permissions page lists every permission, with a column for each sign-in, and the channel's permissions by group.

  • Dashboard is for streamers and their moderators. It asks who you are and for what lets a moderator act as themselves in the channel they help with: sending chat, your emotes, chat moderation controls, pinning and stream markers. Everything else Roadie does for a channel uses the streamer's groups. A streamer approves these once, and Roadie does not keep a streamer's copy.
  • Invited streamer is somebody setting up a new channel from an invite. It asks only who you are. Your channel's permissions come in groups — Know your community, Channel points & giveaways, Chat composer and others. You choose them when you set up Roadie, and can turn any of them on or off later under Twitch permissions on My account. A feature whose group is off is greyed out and asks for it when you open it. Each time, Twitch is asked for every group that is on, so a group you turned on stays on.
  • Viewer site is a viewer signing in on a channel's viewer site to see their tickets and prizes. It asks only who you are.

What you can do in Roadie depends on the access the channel gave you, not on how you signed in. Features disabled by the Roadie administrator are left out, and Twitch's approval screen always shows the exact list for your sign-in. Twitch sometimes groups several abilities under one permission; the permissions page says when that happens and what Roadie actually does.

The full list, permission by permission, sign-in by sign-in and group by group, is on Twitch permissions. Anyone can read it there before signing in.

Separate bot connections

These are separate from your ordinary account connection:

Account and permissionWhy Roadie asks for itWho approves it
Your chosen chat bot: user:bot and user:write:chatLets Roadie send chat messages as the bot account you connect. The person signed in to that bot's Twitch account, using the bot connection link.
Roadie's own account: user:manage:whispersLets Roadie send a welcome Twitch whisper to a new account owner. The Roadie operator, using Roadie's own Twitch account. Tenants and mods do not grant this for Roadie's welcome whispers.

If the request is for your channel

A Roadie notice titled We made Roadie even better. It lists one improvement, Count Twitch Charity donations toward Streamathon, and why it needs a new Twitch approval. Below are an Update permissions button and a link to this article.
The notice names each improvement and why it needs permission.

The notice lists the improvements waiting for permission and the reason for each one. Choose Update permissions and Twitch shows you exactly what is being added. Your Twitch connection is also on My account. Twitch shows the permissions before you approve them.

Only the channel's own Twitch account can approve its connection. A mod or a platform admin visiting that channel can see the notice, but the channel owner needs to complete the approval while signed in as themselves. A mod may also need to approve their own account to perform an action, such as pinning a message; that approval does not replace the channel owner's.

If the request is for you as a mod

Your personal Roadie account is separate from the channel you help with. If Roadie needs information from your account, the request should address you directly, explain what it enables, and link to where you can provide it. The channel owner cannot provide your personal information for you.

A notice naming the channel owner is a request for their account. You can let them know it is waiting; it does not ask you to connect your own Twitch channel.

You stay in control

Review a request before approving it. Features that need a missing permission wait for that permission; approving it does not erase what Roadie has already recorded. You can disconnect your channel from My account to stop collecting new Twitch data while keeping the data already recorded.

Optional email notifications have their own choices on My account. You can turn optional emails off without losing the notifications in your bell. Account and security email is listed separately.

A connection repair is different

If Twitch stops accepting a connection, Roadie explains that it needs reconnecting. That message should describe the actual problem. Likewise, a server setup problem requires the Roadie administrator to fix it. An improvement notice appears when a working connection needs additional permission for new capabilities.
